YouTube Comedy Week Info

Cry havoc! and let slip the dogs of hilarity!

I don’t have to tell you, dear readers, of the videographic monstrosity that is YouTube. I once heard it described as a technological Scylla, a million screaming faces thrusting their visages before us. (And with that reference to Greek mythology, the tone of this article has become much more serious than I intended. Let me begin again.)

Knock knock… No, that’s not it either…Ah! I think I have it now.

What do you call it when the biggest video purveyor on the web teams up with professional producers and some of the world’s funniest people (professionals and amateurs)? There’s no punchline to this one, friends. This is real life.

Starting this evening at 8pm EST, YouTube will be hosting hordes of hilarious videos. You can check out the spotlight channel here. The whole thing is going to start off with a global live stream of The Big Live Comedy Show (link to be found here). Some of the big names involved this week include Andy Samberg and Sarah Silverman, to name a few. Samberg, of course, comes to us from SNL, but who hasn’t watched Lonely Island videos on YouTube? (I know I watch “I’m on a Boat” all the time.)

Silverman I knew was a comedian, but she’s also part of a comedy group called Jash, and I didn’t know that about her. Also in Jash are¬†Michael Cera, Tim Heidecker, Eric Wareheim, and Reggie Watts. If you’re not familiar with Jash (as I was not), the group came about after Google acquired YouTube last year. Since YouTube has lots and lots of viewers (and that’s putting it lightly), Google invested a lot of money in creating “official” channels. (Things like Geek and Sundry, for example.)

But it’s not just the heavy hitters this week. I hesitate to call them amateurs, but people whose fame is more limited (let’s call them the non-movie/TV people) will also be heavily involved. If you like watching the videos of the Onion, Tobuscus, Epic Rap Battles of History or College Humor, then you should enjoy this week. ¬†(I know I’m excited.)

Whose videos are you looking forward to seeing this week? Any funny videos we should know about? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Colin wears many hats (only some of which are trilbies). He's a writer of strange and sundry things, from novellas about smugglers on a flying ship to short stories about the perfect prison of the future. He's also a student, currently pursuing a master's degree in creative writing. In his free time he likes to read (especially anthologies of the Year's Best speculative fiction), play video games (Borderlands 2 and Skyrim are practically an addiction), and he's been making board/card games like a MAD! (So heads up, game publishers.)
