The Harry Potter Movie World is Expanding!
That’s right, J.K. Rowling is making another movie!
Since this past Thursday (September 12, 2013), Harry Potter fans–including myself–have been freaking out on Muggle Net, as it was announced that J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers are partnering together to turn the Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” into a movie.
Now, before you get too excited, wait a moment. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will not be the eighth Harry Potter movie.
“‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world,” said Rowling.
Our favorite Boy-Who-Lived will not be appearing on the silver screen in this movie. The movie instead will be following the fictional author of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them“, Newt Scamander‘s story. Don’t worry, though, we will still be able to be a part of our favorite wizarding world.
“The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway,” said Rowling.
We’ll get the chance to see what the world was like before not only Harry, but also before He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Although most of our beloved witches and wizards will have not yet been born in this movie, I’m hoping we might see a few cameos. You know, Albus Dumbledore was a bit over a hundred years old when he died, so he could theoretically appear. (Something to keep in mind, Warner Brothers!)
There’s no set date yet for when production or filming will start. In fact, there’s hardly any information out yet at all. Something we do know for sure, however, is that Rowling herself will be writing the script.
“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt,” said Rowling. “As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood. As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.”
Also, Warner Brothers will not only be turning “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them“ into a movie, they will also be making it into a video game and including it on Pottermore.
