The Big Bang Theory Review: "The Date Night Variable"

“The Season Six premiere of The Big Bang Theory was full of that same awkward & lovable comedy that we have all grown to know and love over the last five years.”

***Spoilers***

The Season Six premiere of The Big Bang Theory was full of that same awkward & lovable comedy that we have all grown to know and love over the last five years. My chief complaint with the show currently is that the cast of characters are becoming less and less believable. They are being placed in more and more ridiculous situations and the shows writers tend to rely on cheap one liners for laughs, rather than holding themselves to a higher standard of excellence in the story telling department. Many of the jokes used to be high brow intellectual humor, but I found myself shocked and appalled as I heard a your mamma is so dumb joke sprinkled into tonight’s episode. Once just a bunch of social misfits the cast has become almost cartoony versions of their previous selves. I’m also very disappointed that Raj and Howard–the supporting characters–are getting more air time then the three leads.

I loved the nick name Raj comes up for Howard at the shows outset. Zeusowitz the Greek/Jewish God has such a nice ring to it! Sheldon is clearly insanely jealous of Howard and never misses an opportunity to mock or insult him and his intelligence  This has become his MO. He even mocks Leonard’s intelligence given the chance.  Leonard responds in anger and frustration but these feelings are both lost and wasted on Sheldon. I’m honestly wondering how they have a continued friendship after all this time. On a side note… Internet can anyone explain Sheldon’s Shirt in this episode? Comment below if your mental prowess and web searching skills are up to snuff.

Circling back to my comment before about this episode being full of awkward situations here is a quick recap of some of the scenes I found pretty awkward.

1.) Penny helping Amy bleach her upper lip for her two-year anniversary date with Sheldon. I must just interject here that I do love the Shammy dynamic.

2.) Sheldon inviting Raj on said date with Amy and him actually agreeing to go. In his defense he didn’t know it was their anniversary and he tries to make it better by ordering champagne.

3.) The drama in outer space between Howard, his now wife Bernadette and his mother. I’m left wondering if this sort of thing would even be allowed?

4.) The writers making Howard’s mom out to be so dumb she thinks she can catch a virus from her computer. It really sounded like a high school your mamma is so dumb joke.

5.) Leonard shaving his stomach to try impress Penny.  In fact their entire interaction is very awkward. Then Raj shows up and it becomes even stranger. The way they all behave besides Raj becoming belligerent is completely unbelievable.)

6.) Raj spending the entire episode drunk and eventually asking Stuart the comic book guy out on a bro date. This scene is made even more awkward because he ends up comforting himself and justifying his acceptance to the date request by saying, “I could do worse.” I can’t even imagine how lonely these two must feel.

“All in all the episode was enjoyable even with all the awkwardness, and I’m glad it’s back.”

All in all the episode was enjoyable even with all the awkwardness, and I’m glad it’s back. What was your favorite part of the Season Six premiere? I know my favorite part was when Amy almost broke up with Sheldon; but, then he was able to appease her by quoting some lines from the first Spiderman movie.

Penny and Leonard’s issues continue to go unresolved, and is absolutely one of the chief reasons to keep tuning in every week. I was also pleasantly surprised by the zero-gravity scenes I half expected them to start the season with Howard coming home from space much like they did when the boys went to the Antarctic.

It will be interesting to see where The Big Bang Theory goes from here.
