The Big Bang Theory Review: "The Extract Obliteration"

Sheldon Plays Words With Friends With Stephen Hawking in Season 6 Episode 6

So this week’s episode revolved around Sheldon making friends with Stephen Hawking over the game Words With Friends. Words With Friends is a fun scrabble-like application for smart devices. It made me smile to see; I mean hear another Stephen Hawking cameo even if it was just his voice. Sheldon settles into his normal ways and does his very best to Geek Smash Hawking’s in a battle of wits. He is doing it very well I might add until he plays the word  ‘extract,’ taking a massive lead and suddenly Hawking stops playing. Sheldon freaking out over this is awesome and watching him try a multitude of things to try to get him to keep playing was perfect. At one point Sheldon even attempts to employ Jedi mind powers. I’ll be honest; I was sort of hoping they would work. I find it fascinating the things that Sheldon believes in.

Howard, who as you might remember worked with Hawking last season, recounts a little tale about the one time he corrected Hawking and it resulted in him being ostracized. Apparently Hawking can’t stand to be wrong and can’t stand to lose (an  issue we saw Sheldon dealing with just a few episodes ago). Sheldon is yearning for Hawking’s friendship even more than he desires winning, and he realizes he must throw the game. Watching Sheldon deal with a moral dilemma such as throwing a game is a tried and true bit the writers rely on. The unique spin they use in this episode is the heckling from Hawking that results from his losing. It was the icing on the comedy cake. I was pretty surprised Sheldon was not only able to throw the game but tolerate the fallout. Maybe he’s transforming into some sort of super Sheldon capable of human interactions.

The second or subplot of the episode involved Penny going back to school. She is taking a history class at the community college and at the outset of the episode she does not want to tell Leonard about it because she was afraid he’d make a big fuss over it. Amy and Bernadette encourage her to tell him and of course eventually she lets the cat out of the bag, and Leonard does make a big stink about it.

Leonard is really obsessive about helping Penny, and Penny is very set on being independent. Penny has written a paper for her class that Leonard cannot help himself but to read while she is asleep. Afterwards he goes to Sheldon for counsel and advice on what to do and how to deal with his guilt. Sheldon of course is no help as he is dealing with his own drama with Stephen Hawking. I was totally on Penny’s side right up until she had Amy and Bernadette write another paper for her, It was funny hearing them admit they intentionally got her a B to make it more believable.

What did you think of the episode? What was your favorite line? Stephen Hawking trash-talking Sheldon was absolutely mine. Let me know below!
