The 3Doodler: Pen Of The Future
It’s a 3-D printer and a pen, all in one!
WobbleWorks, a small toy and robotics company, recently developed the 3Doodler, a pen that draws in the air. No, I swear I’m not pulling your leg. It actually draws in the air. You don’t need paper or really anything at all on which to draw, because the 3Doodler isn’t so much a pen as a 3D printer which fits in the your hand.
“Everyone knows how to use a pen, so we designed a 3D printing pen! If you can scribble, trace or wave a finger in the air you can use a 3Doodler. As you draw, plastic comes out of the pen, is cooled by an integrated fan, and solidifies right in front of you. You can draw on any surface and lift it up into the air to create your own 3D objects.”
-Maxwell Bogue, Co-Founder & CTO of WobbleWorks.
This pen lets you draw three-dimensional shapes not with lead or ink, but plastic. Inside the 3Doodler is a small electric heater that melts plastic which then cools as it comes out of the end of the pen. In their Kickstarter video, they show some “drawings” that have already been created with a 3Doodler like this miniature Eiffel Tower and ostrich.
The product was funded by Kickstarter back in the spring. Its goal of $30,000 was surpassed in just a few hours. The funding ended on March 25 with an excess of $2,314,134 (enough to pay for my college education and both the Xbox One and Playstation 4).
The Kickstarter backers will be the first to get their own 3Doodler, but you can preorder your own today for only $99. The shipping and tax will be calculated and paid at a later date, but if you don’t like the rates you will be fully refunded, no questions asked. With each preorder you will receive 50 10-inch strands of plastic in at least five different colors. All preorders will be shipped in February 2014.
Are you interested in getting a 3Doodler, or have you already purchased one? I know that I would get one if I wasn’t a poor college student. I mean come on, you can draw anything, anywhere. If I had one I think I might draw my own Sonic Screwdriver, although, I think I’d need some practice before I could attempt that mighty feat. What sort of things would you make? A bow tie, the Batman logo, some flowers for a special friend? Tell us in the comments below or tweet me @ChickadeePoems.
