Starling City… there’s a new Big Bad in town!

We’re only a little over a month away from the Season 3 premiere of “Arrow” and it seems these days we’re being bombarded with news and promos for The CW’s Green Arrow series (speaking of, I just posted my coverage of the “Arrow” panels/press conferences from Dragon Con). Today is no exception, with the release of a brand new Season 3 promo (above) and a very big casting announcement.

Today E! News confirmed that “Riddick” star Matt Nable will play Ra’s al Ghul, who was teased throughout Season 2 and will be the main threat to The Arrow and company this season. Nable as Ra’s, father of Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law) and leader of the League of Shadows whose name translates to “The Head of the Demon,” follows in the footsteps of the amazing John Barrowman, who played Season 1 Big Bad Malcolm Merlyn, and the amazingly badass Manu Bennett, who brought to life (brilliantly, I might add) Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke in the terrific Season 2.

Matt Nable is "Arrow"'s Ra's al Ghul

Of course, Liam Neeson previously played the character of Ra’s al Ghul in Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (talk about big shoes to fill). This casting may be disappointing for some people after a recent interview with MTV, where Neeson stated that he would reprise the role in “Arrow” “in a heartbeat.” This got me excited as well, but upon rewatching the interview, I noticed that it didn’t seem like Neeson fully grasped the question. I highly doubt he knew he would send the internet in a tizzy over his potential appearance in the show; it’s much more likely he assumed the interviewer was asking about another movie.

I haven’t seen “Riddick,” nor any of Nable’s other work, but that’s usually the case with a lot of the actors that have been cast on the show. I will reserve judgement until the character’s first appearance, which is slated for the fourth episode of this season–which will also be the show’s 50th episode–entitled “The Magician.”

“Arrow” Season 3 premieres Wednesday October 8th on The CW. Matt Nable joins returning cast members Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, Willa Holland, David Ramsey, Paul Blackthorne, Emily Bett Rickards, Colton Haynes, and John Barrowman, as well as Caity Lotz, who will appear in at least 3 episodes this season. They will also be joined this season by Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), J.R. Ramirez (Ted Grant/Wildcat), Rila Fukushima (Katana), Peter Stormare (the new Count Vertigo), David Cubitt (Manhunter), Nolan Funk (Cooper Seldon), Matt Ward (Komodo), Karl Yune (Maseo Yamashiro), and Charlotte Ross (Felicity’s mother).
